The state government has announced the date next month of a state memorial service for former Yarra councillor and mayor, and Labor MP Jane Garrett.

Garrett was elected as a Nicholls ward councillor at Yarra in November 2008 and became mayor in 2010.

She moved on to state parliament the same year, where she served as the Member for Brunswick and later, the Member for Eastern Victoria in the upper house.

Over 12 years she was the Minister for Consumer Affairs, Gaming and Liquor Regulation, Minister for Emergency Services, Parliamentary Secretary and Shadow Cabinet Secretary.

A passionate advocate for social justice and the rights of working people, Garrett was remembered with emotion by former colleagues at the council last month.

The state memorial service will be held at the Brunswick Town Hall at 11am on Friday, September 2, with the doors opening at 10am.

The service will also be live streamed at vic.gov.au/jane-garrett for those unable to attend in person.

In lieu of floral tributes Garrett's family have asked for contributions to be made to the Smith Family at www.thesmithfamily.com.au/donate.
