Flags were flown at half-mast at Yarra City's town halls last week in memory of Archie Roach, AM, a former resident and frequent performer in the area, who died on July 31.
Deputy Mayor Edward Crossland paid tribute to the Gunditjmara-Bundjalung singer- songwriter, whose debut album, Charcoal Lane, was named after the Fitzroy laneway that was a meeting place for Aboriginal people in the 1960s, '70s and '80s.
"I found my family on the streets of Fitzroy. It is also where I found my voice and was the backdrop to so much of my music and my story," Crossland quoted Roach as saying.
