Woolworths and Coles have dominated the 2024 consumer survey Product of the Year awards with their popular home brand items although Aldi topped them in affordability.

Woolworths was also recognised as the leading retailer with the best selection of fresh, healthy and organic products.

The awards were voted on by 5,000 Australians.

Supermarkets are designed to make shoppers buy more. Here are a few of the sneaky tricks to look out for.

Product of the Year director Sarah Connelly said rising cost of living pressure had shaped shopping decisions with affordability and ease the "leading driver".

NielsenIQ research found that 45 per cent of Australians were switching to home brand options to save money at the checkout.

"The Nielsen findings highlight how Australian consumption habits have shifted considerably, with the cost of living crisis echoing through many households," Ms Connelly said.

Shoppers were cutting out treats like chocolates, desserts and premium nuts from their shopping lists to bring down costs, she said.

"Whilst snacks and treats were commonplace in the shopping trolly before living expenses started to increase exponentially, these are now classed as luxury items rather than a need, with many shoppers viewing snacks as a low priority when it comes to feeding the family," she said.
