A bakery in regional Victoria has claimed the title of Australia's best hot cross buns just weeks out from Easter.

Shepparton's North End Bakehouse won the acclaimed national award at the Baking Association of Australia's Victorian Baking Show on February 24.

It also made history as the first bakery to win both of the event's national titles, also scoring the top award for Australia's best vanilla slice.

The bakery's status as makers of the best snot block in Australia was also confirmed in August 2023 at The Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph.

"Last night at the Baking Association of Australia Baking Show, we cleaned up the two major awards," North End Bakehouse shared in a Facebook post.

"This is the first time a bakery has taken both major awards in the same year, and for us makes it 3x times Hot X Bun winners & 2x Vanilla Slice winners in this show!

"The little bakery that could... these awards mean so much to us."

There were 120 bakeries from across Victoria, NSW, Tasmania and South Australia competing at the Victorian Baking Show event in Bendigo.

While most categories judged different styles of bread the event also featured other bakery favourites such as meat pies and sausage rolls, iced donuts and fruit tarts.
