It was smelly work for two police officers and a sniffer dog when an alleged armed robber was found hiding in a dumpster.

The 37-year-old Telopea man allegedly robbed a licenced hotel in Kingswood, western Sydney at 12.40am on May 8 with a gun, police said.

He escaped the pub with cash after allegedly threatening three staff members and got into the backseat of a rideshare car.

The search continued for 40 minutes before a police dog caught the man's scent in a Bringelly Lane dumpster.

The stolen cash was allegedly found during a search of the man.

He has been charged with robbery while armed with dangerous weapon and was refused bail while his case progresses through Penrith Local Court.
