The tastiest supermarket hot cross buns this Easter belong to Woolworths, according to CHOICE.
Three experts blind tested 29 varieties from Coles, Woolworths, IGA, Aldi, Bakers Delight and Costco, both fresh and toasted for flavour, appearance, aroma and texture.
"With the long Easter weekend creeping closer many people are filling their trolleys with hot cross buns," CHOICE editorial director Mark Serrels said.
"These days, there are so many different varieties that it can be hard to find the best of the bunch, but CHOICE is here with the answers."
It comes after a regional Victorian bakery won the title of the nation's best hot cross buns at the Baking Association of Australia's Victorian Baking Show in February.
The best fruit hot cross buns
Woolworths' Luxurious Richly Fruited Hot Cross Buns received the highest rating of 72 per cent and contained the most fruit at 30 per cent.
"These hot cross buns were soft, had a nice chew and were pleasant on the nose, especially when toasted," CHOICE editorial director Mark Serrels said.
At $1.25 per bun the product came at a higher price compared to the runner-up; Woolworths' Traditional Fruit Hot Cross Buns at 67 cents per bun and a rating of 67 per cent.
Bakers Delight's traditional offering came in a close third with a 65 per cent rating at $1.50 a bun.
The best chocolate hot cross buns
Not all hot cross bun lovers are in it for the fruit though with many getting a chocolate fix instead.
The judges declared Bakers Delight winners in this category with its choc chip hot cross buns - rated 70 per cent and costing $1.50 per bun.
Woolworths' Cadbury Milk Chocolate Chip Buns ranked second with a rating of 68 per cent, at 67 cents per bun.
Aldi's Bakers Life Chocolate Hot Cross Buns at 62 cents per bun.
The results were declared by three experts including freelance food consultant, judge and reviewer Brigid Treloar, and pastry chef and the chair of judges for the Royal Agricultural Society Professional Bakery competition Ian Huntly.
