Would-be thieves allegedly broke into a convenience store to steal cigarettes but left with a different type of smoke.

The store's security system was triggered by their alleged attempts to break through the wires protecting the front counter, activating a smoke bomb.

Police said the three alleged offenders fled the scene empty-handed after a plume of smoke filled the Cranbourne North store in south-east Melbourne on March 27.

Security footage showed the men wearing hoods, caps and face coverings. One man, holding bolt cutters, tried to kick open an internal door.

Another man, holding a large sack, was seen jumping excitedly before he's hit with a thick blast of smoke.

Investigators believe the men had smashed the shop's front window with a hammer and tried to access the cigarette cupboards behind the counter.
