Art adds depth, personality and a sense of style to your home, and beyond mere decoration, has the power to evoke emotion, spark conversation and create focal points within living spaces.

"By thoughtfully integrating textures, colours and art prints into each room according to its function and mood, you can create a cohesive and inviting home environment that reflects your personal style and enhances your overall wellbeing," said Michelle Owen, owner of fine art photography website, Almost Real.

Once the art has found its home, you also want to ensure the rest of your belongings suit each space just as well. Here's Michelle's tips on how to style your home to complement the art:

The entryway

  • Make a welcoming first impression with a durable rug to trap dirt and debris while adding texture and colour.
  • Incorporate tactile elements, such as woven baskets for storage and textured benches for seating. Add a statement piece of artwork or mirror with an interesting frame.

The living room

  • Opt for inviting and cosy textures such as velvet or faux fur for seating areas.
  • Incorporate tactile elements, such as woven baskets, knit throws, or embroidered pillows to add visual interest.

The bedroom

  • Prioritise textures that promote relaxation and serenity, such as soft, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen for bedding.
  • Layer the bed with textured throws, quilts, or duvet covers to create a cosy and inviting atmosphere. Plush rugs beside the bed add comfort.

The kitchen

  • Focus on textures that are both practical and stylish, such as durable materials like stone or wood for countertops and flooring.
  • Introduce texture through textiles, such as woven placemats or linen dish towels. Natural elements such as marble or wood accents can add warmth and sophistication.

The bathroom

  • Create a spa-like feel with soft, absorbent towels in luxurious materials such as Egyptian cotton or bamboo.
  • Incorporate natural elements such as marble, stone, or wood accents to enhance relaxation. Textured bath mats and shower curtains add visual interest.
